Health insurance can be confusing, but these four key terms can help you better understand how your coverage works:
This is the amount you’re responsible for paying out-of-pocket for covered healthcare services before your insurance begins to share the cost. For example, if your annual deductible is $1,000, you’ll need to pay that amount towards all your medical care before your insurance kicks in.
A co-pay is a fixed fee you pay for certain services, like a physical therapy session or a visit to your primary care doctor. The amount is usually listed on your insurance card and is due at the time of service.
After you've met your deductible, co-insurance is the percentage you pay for covered services. For instance, with 20% co-insurance, you pay 20% of the bill, and your insurance covers the other 80%.
This is the most you’ll have to pay during your plan year for covered services. Once you reach this limit—including what you've paid toward your deductible, co-pays, and co-insurance—your insurance covers 100% of covered expenses for the rest of the year.
